It is geometry, not a fault
A wedding band is a straight circle. An engagement ring is a circle with a structure sitting on top of it. Where that structure descends below the top of the shank, or extends beyond it, the band cannot get closer than the structure allows.
Nothing has gone wrong. Getting a wedding band flush with an engagement ring is a design outcome that has to be planned for, and if the two rings were bought separately — which most are, often years apart — nobody was in a position to plan it.
What is actually creating the gap
The head and its height. The setting holding the stone has a basket beneath it, and that basket has a lower edge. A cathedral setting, where the shoulders rise up to meet the stone, puts metal exactly where a straight band wants to sit.
Prongs. Claws wrap the stone and come down past its widest point. On a low setting they can reach below the top line of the shank, which stops a band before it makes contact.
The stone's own shape. This one surprises people. Pear, marquise and oval stones have points or lengths that extend past the width of the band. Set east to west, the stone can overhang the shank entirely on both sides.
The under-gallery. The structure bridging beneath the stone — often the most beautiful part of a ring and the part nobody sees — occupies space directly above the finger, which is space a band would otherwise take.
Pavé on the shoulders. Small stones set along the shank need their own metal around them, and that metal is not flat.
Sometimes the gap is doing a job
This part rarely gets said, and it matters more than the aesthetics.
Two rings in constant contact wear each other. Metal against metal, thousands of times a day, for decades. If the two rings are different alloys the softer one loses, and the wear is not even — it concentrates wherever the contact is.
A band pressed hard against a setting also knocks prongs. Not dramatically, and not on any particular day, but a claw that is nudged continually for ten years is a claw that eventually needs attention. A small deliberate space is sometimes protecting the thing everyone is worried about.
So before you set out to close a gap, it is worth asking whether the maker left it there on purpose.
If you want them to meet
A contoured band is cut to follow the profile of the engagement ring — notched, curved, or shaped to nest against it. It is the most complete solution and it has three costs worth knowing in advance. It is matched to that specific ring, so if the engagement ring is ever re-set the contour may no longer fit. It has an orientation, so it can only be worn one way round. And resizing it is harder than resizing a plain band, because changing the circumference changes where the contour lands.
A chevron or V-shaped band handles pointed stones by making a virtue of the geometry rather than fighting it, and often looks more deliberate than a straight band forced into place.
A lower head is the answer if the engagement ring has not been made yet. A low-profile setting solves this at the design stage and brings other advantages with it, since a stone sitting closer to the finger catches less on everything it passes.
Designing both together is the version nobody regrets. If you are commissioning an engagement ring and know a band will follow, the band can be drawn at the same time and the pair modelled against each other before either exists.
If you would rather keep the space
A gap is a legitimate look. It reads as two distinct objects rather than one merged one, it lets the setting stand clear, and it means each ring can be worn alone without looking like half of something.
If the only issue is the two rings rubbing, a slim spacer sits between them and takes the wear instead. It is a cheap component and it is easier to replace than either ring.
Neither arrangement is more correct. They are two different objects, and the choice is which one you would rather look at.
Where this bites hardest
Two-stone rings. A toi et moi setting has an unusual footprint — two stones sitting side by side make a wider and less regular profile than a single centre stone, and a straight band almost never nests against one by accident.
Which is a strong argument for designing the band at the same time. Union commissions are usually drawn as a pair for exactly this reason, so the second ring is a decision rather than a discovery.
What to ask before it becomes a problem
Ask, while the engagement ring is still being designed, whether a straight band will sit against it. Any maker can answer that from the drawing, and the answer determines whether the head should be lower.
Ask what the two rings are made of. Different alloys wearing against each other is the slow problem nobody warns about.
And if you already own an engagement ring and are commissioning the band, bring the ring rather than photographs of it. Contours are cut to a profile, and a profile has to be measured.
